Automotive Exhaust Stands
Exhaust stands are tools common to professional auto repair shops. After a vehicle has been raised on the hoist, this tool is used specifically to support the exhaust line underneath a vehicle. These stands are rated to bear a certain amount of weight, so they should never be used to support any more than that. Nor should it be used to support a vehicle’s axle or other underbelly components. The tool's maximum weight capacity, its minimum height and its maximum height are the three important specifications regarding this type of stand.
Because the exhaust components of many cars, trucks and other vehicles weigh about the same, exhaust stands don't come in a lot of sizes with widely varying capacities. For the most part, stands are capable of supporting around 750 kg which is more than enough to hold up a muffler, pipes or other parts. The stands have a minimum height of around 1400 mm and a maximum height that typically reaches over 2000 mm. A spinner nut and ball bearing assembly together with a handle is how adjustments to the height are made.
The steel base of stand is usually round with a mounting fixture welded to it. There is a threaded cavity in the base fixture into which goes the base tube where the main column is mounted. The main column is the component that gives the stand its height. The threaded rod passes through the bearing assembly, a threaded ring that installs into the top of the column. This rod is entirely threaded and is what extends the stand's height. The rod fits inside the column, being shorter and narrower. A two-arm handle with rubber grips and threaded center cylinder spins onto the rod. The part that comes into contact with the exhaust assembly is the saddle, a Y-shaped steel part that mounts to the top of the rod.

The center cylinder of the handle affixes to the top of the column, so it stays in place when the handle is rotated, while the rod and saddle are pushed upward. Perfect for holding the exhaust system in place while you remove it or make repairs, the upward force exerts pressure, keeping the part from falling. The base is easily detachable thanks to a removable fixing rod and R-clip.
